At SJJA, we are deeply committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and empowering training environment for all adults, with specific attention to the unique needs and experiences of our female members. This policy outlines our proactive measures to ensure physical, emotional, and psychological safety in all training spaces.

Respect & Zero Tolerance for Misconduct

  • Members must respect personal boundaries in all training scenarios.
  • Physical techniques must always be executed with control, respect, and care—never with excessive force or beyond a partner’s limits.
  • If a student feels uncomfortable at any point, they are encouraged to communicate immediately with their instructor or opt out of a drill without judgment.

Boundaries, Consent & Partner Safety

  • Members must respect personal boundaries in all training scenarios.

  • If a student feels uncomfortable at any point, they are encouraged to communicate immediately with their instructor or opt out of a drill without judgment.

Instructor Training & Responsibilities

All SJJA instructors and staff are required to:
  • Hold valid Working With Children Check (WWCC) certifications (where applicable).
  • Be certified in First Aid and CPR.
  • Complete regular training in:
    • Gender sensitivity & inclusion
    • Handling disclosures of misconduct
    • Safe physical contact and conflict de-escalation
  • Monitor class pairings to ensure balanced and appropriate training partners, especially in mixed-gender or open-level classes.

Facility & Class Design for Comfort and Safety

  • Clean, gender-specific change rooms, restrooms, and designated areas are maintained to ensure privacy and comfort.
  • SJJA offers or may introduce:
    • Women-only classes
    • Female-led workshops
    • Designated mat zones or open mat hours for women
  • Class structure and curriculum are adapted to match all fitness levels and backgrounds.

Reporting and Confidentiality

  • Students are strongly encouraged to report any inappropriate or unsafe behavior to staff, management, or through confidential channels.
  • All reports are:
    • Taken seriously
    • Handled with discretion and care
    • Investigated promptly following internal procedures
  • No student or staff member will face retaliation for reporting a concern in good faith.

Female Empowerment & Representation

  • Female members are actively supported through:
    • Mentorship from female instructors
    • Access to peer support networks
    • Dedicated female training sessions (on request)
    • Check-ins to ensure experiences align with SJJA values

Safe Training Practices

  • Drills, sparring, and physical contact are introduced progressively, with consent and comfort as priorities.
  • Pairings are mindfully selected to avoid mismatches (e.g., excessive size, strength, or skill differences).
  • Students may always request to change partners or take a break without pressure.

Events, Seminars & Travel

  • SJJA ensures all off-site or special events (camps, competitions, seminars) have:
    • Clear codes of conduct
    • Chaperones and female representatives, where appropriate
    • Access to safe transport and communication with home academy

Accountability & Disciplinary Action

  • Violations of this policy may lead to:
    • Formal warnings
    • Suspension of training privileges
    • Expulsion from SJJA
    • Referral to appropriate authorities if required
  • Misconduct by coaches or staff will trigger immediate review and action by senior management.

Policy Awareness & Ongoing Review

  • All members agree to this policy as part of their membership.
  • This policy will be reviewed annually or as needed, in consultation with:
    • Legal advisors
    • Staff and members
    • External experts in gender and safety
