Professionalism

  • Maintain professionalism in appearance, language, and conduct during all interactions.
  • Always wear the clean, approved SJJA uniform and encourage students to do the same.
  • Uphold the confidentiality of personal information shared by students and parents.

Fair Treatment

  • Treat all students and athletes fairly and with equal consideration.
  • Avoid favouritism and provide constructive feedback to aid in their development.

Safety and Welfare

  • Prioritise the safety and well-being of students during training and events.
  • Address any safety concerns promptly and appropriately.

Skill Development

  • Continuously seek to enhance your coaching skills through training and education.
  • Foster an environment that encourages skill development and growth.

Adherence to Curriculum

  • Follow the curriculum established by the martial arts school.
  • Provide clear and consistent instructions to facilitate student understanding.

Conflict Resolution

  • Address conflicts or disputes with students, parents, or fellow coaches calmly and professionally.
  • Involve school management when necessary to resolve issues

Ethical Coaching

  • Promote fair play, honesty, and ethical behaviour among students.
  • Discourage unsportsmanlike conduct and instill values of respect.

Commitment To Learning

  • Commit to ongoing learning and professional development.
  • Stay informed about the latest teaching methodologies and martial arts advancements.
  • Attendance at the SJJA Summit and annual training course is mandatory.

Positive Team Environment

  • Foster a positive team environment among coaching staff.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to create a cohesive and supportive coaching team.

Boundaries and Respect at All Times

  • Maintain clear professional boundaries with all students—on and off the mats.
  • Treat every student with respect and dignity, regardless of age, gender, or background.
  • Inappropriate comments, advances, physical contact, or any behaviour that could be interpreted as sexual harassment or assault will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
  • Report any suspicious or inappropriate behaviour immediately to senior staff or management.
  • Coaches are expected to set the standard for respectful, safe, and inclusive conduct at all times.

Safe & Respectful Training Environment

  • Ensure that all training partners are appropriately matched by size, age, experience level, and physical ability—especially when working with kids, women, and beginner students.
  • Students must always feel safe, supported, and confident during training.
  • It is the coach’s responsibility to monitor and prevent mismatches or situations where students may be overwhelmed, unsafe, or at risk of injury.
  • Never push students beyond their physical or emotional limits, and always reinforce a culture of control, respect, and care on the mats.
  • The training environment must reflect SJJA’s core values: safety, inclusion, and student development.

Certifications & Compliance

  • All coaches must maintain valid Working With Children Check (WWCC), and hold current CPR and First Aid certifications.
  • Participation in the annual SJJA training course is compulsory.
  • These qualifications and trainings are essential to ensure the safety and professionalism expected at SJJA.
  • Coaches must renew and submit updated certifications to management as required.

Breach of Conduct

  • All SJJA coaches are expected to adhere to this Code of Conduct at all times.
  • If a coach breaches any part of this Code, SJJA reserves the right to investigate the matter thoroughly.
  • Following the investigation, SJJA may take appropriate action, which may include removal of the coach from the team, depending on the severity of the breach.

By adhering to this code of conduct, you contribute to the growth and success of our martial arts community and help create a safe, positive, and enriching environment for all.
