Policy Statement

SJJA does not tolerate discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, marital status, or any other characteristic protected by law. All members of the SJJA community are expected to uphold this policy and contribute to an inclusive environment.

Scope

This policy applies to all students, staff, visitors, and any other individuals participating in SJJA activities, both on and off the premises.

Definition of Discrimination

Discrimination includes, but is not limited to:

  • Direct Discrimination: Treating someone less favorably because of a protected characteristic.
  • Indirect Discrimination: Implementing policies or practices that, although appearing neutral, disproportionately disadvantage individuals with a protected characteristic.
  • Harassment: Unwelcome behavior related to a protected characteristic that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment.
  • Victimization: Retaliating against someone for making a complaint of discrimination or for supporting someone else’s complaint.

Responsibilities

  • Management and Staff: Ensure the implementation and adherence to this policy. Provide training on discrimination and inclusivity. Address any reports of discrimination promptly and effectively.
  • Students and Visitors: Abide by this policy and treat everyone with respect and dignity. Report any instances of discrimination to SJJA management.

Reporting and Complaint Procedures

  • Reporting: Anyone who experiences or witnesses discrimination should report the incident to SJJA management or a designated discrimination officer.
  • Confidentiality: All reports will be handled confidentially to the extent possible, and information will only be shared on a need-to-know basis.
  • Investigation: SJJA will conduct a prompt, thorough, and impartial investigation of any reported discrimination. This may include interviews with the complainant, the accused, and any witnesses.
  • Resolution: Based on the findings, appropriate actions will be taken, which may include disciplinary measures, up to and including termination of membership or employment.

Support and Resources Resources

  • Counseling and Support: Offer support services, including counseling, to those affected by discrimination.
  • Education and Training: Provide regular training sessions on discrimination prevention, cultural competency, and creating an inclusive environment.

Review and Monitoring

  • Policy Review: This policy will be reviewed annually or as needed to ensure it remains effective and relevant.
  • Monitoring: Monitor the dojo environment and the effectiveness of this policy through surveys, feedback, and incident reports.

Consequences of Violation

    • Disciplinary Action: Individuals found to have violated this policy will face disciplinary action, which may include suspension or expulsion from the dojo, termination of employment, and/or legal action.
